Oskar Stenmark Quartet

Oskar Stenmark NYC Quartet is making its debut appearance at Deer Head Inn. The group fuses traditional Swedish folk songs with New York Jazz and reinterprets ancient melodies originally performed by Stenmark’s ancestors. All of this together with some of New York’s finest musicians. Stenmark, 10th generation in his family to play this music, has worked with Maria Schneider Orchestra, David Byrne and Dave Liebman. This modern approach to Swedish folk is a fresh addition to the New York Jazz scene.

Author of the critically acclaimed Experiencing Jazz: A Listener’s Companion, Stephans offers an accessible and truly American story of legendary jazz icon Ornette Coleman, the personal challenges he faced, and the incredibly positive attitude he maintained in the face of so much negativity throughout much of his life. He also includes interviews with some of those whose lives Ornette touched, including the legendary saxophonist and jazz icon, Sonny Rollins.

Michael Stephans has played and/or recorded with many jazz luminaries including Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Bennie Maupin, Pharoah Sanders, Bob Brookmeyer, Uri Caine, Alan Broadbent, John Patitucci, Phil Woods, and Bob Dorough, to name a few.
